A Notary is an internationally recognised officer of the law. A Notary prepares, attests, authenticates and certifies deeds and other documents to be used outside the UK. The Notary's signature and official seal mean the documents are acceptable, as proof of the matter attested by them, to the judicial or other public authorities in the country where they are to be used.

Clients often require the services of a Notary when dealing with overseas matters. A Notary acts as an impartial, legally trained witness who will authenticate, and certify the execution of, documents required or intended for use outside the UK.

We use Robin Stephenson who is a Notary Public. There are fewer than 1,000 Notaries in England, and we are pleased to say that Robin acts as our Notary.

It is important to contact a Notary as early as possible, as requirements vary from country to country. The FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) or applicable Consulate may need further authentication.

By virtue of the international status of the office, the signature and seal of a Notary is recognised as evidence of a responsible legal officer in most countries of the world.

If you have an overseas document which requires the services of a Notary, contact Robin. He can arrange for the document to be translated if necessary. Once the document has been notarially certified by him, he will, if required, then arrange for it to be sent for an additional certificate (known as an apostille) to be added by the relevant authority, (normally the FCO).

An apostille is essential in most overseas countries. Without it, documents will not be valid.

Robin can also deal with designations of share capital, protesting bills of exchange and bills of lading.
