Robert Fearnley : Knights
I joined Knights in 2002, having previously worked for a local firm where I also undertook my training contract.

I came to the law as my second career and initially attended Warwick University as part of my work as a timber importer and bulk retailer to the construction and manufacturing industry.

I took my law degree and Legal Practice Course at Staffordshire University and have worked primarily in the local area ever since. I used to commute to Knights from Macclesfield, but have now settled in Staffordshire with my partner Emma and our twin boys.

Within the Tax, Trust & Private Client Department, my areas of work are centred around wills, probates and trusts, with particular emphasis on inheritance tax and capital gains tax mitigation.

In addition to this core work, I undertake general elderly client issues such as capacity problems and protection of assets into old age.

I am a member of STEP (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners). I have also completed the Solicitors for the Elderly entrance papers and am a member of that group.

I am one of the members of the department who also undertakes agricultural work. I am head of the Farming & Rural Affairs Unit and a corporate member of the CLA (Country Land Owners Association).

I have given seminars for various groups of individuals from professional, business and agricultural backgrounds.

When not at work, I tend to have my time filled by my young family and spend the majority of the weekends with them, undertaking one activity or another. However, I still find time to play darts very badly for a local Eccleshall team, which at least ensures I get to the pub at least once a week! In due course, as the children get older, I intend to get to the pub more often!
