I obtained my degree locally at what is now Staffordshire University, although when I was there it was at first North Staffordshire Polytechnic, and latterly Staffordshire Polytechnic. Having completed the professional exams at Chester, I joined Knights in September 1991 to undertake a training contract and have remained with the firm ever since.
When working as a trainee solicitor, I had an interest in employment law and on qualification developed this specialist area of law within the firm. Knights has the largest employment department in the area. I deal with all aspects in employment law, acting primarily for employers but also for some employees. Much of the time I am involved in working closely with my clients, guiding them through the minefield of the employment legislation and seeking to avoid any actions which could potentially lead to claims by employees. Of course even by following good advice, it is not always possible to prevent claims being made. I generally represent clients in employment tribunals myself and carry out my own advocacy, giving clients the advantage of someone who has been involved in and has detailed knowledge of the case from an early stage.
As a regular advocate, I was invited to join the Shrewsbury Employment Tribunal User Group on its inception and benefit from contact with the Employment Judges and others in a less formal setting than just appearing before them as an advocate.
I have in the past acted as external examiner for the employment elective of the Legal Practice Course at Staffordshire University. I and other colleagues provide regular training seminars for clients and non clients alike, both in Knights’ offices and at other locations.
Out of work I am usually fairly active, enjoying a skiing holiday each winter. I am also learning to waterski and paraglide. One of my sons has moved to Australia, requiring trips to be made "down under" on a regular basis.
